Conclusion: Learn from the Past

If you look back at the last time you tried to quit, you may have a bit of willpower bravado: maybe you did slug some psychological cravings clean out of the ballpark without any of this craving-control nonsense. If so, good for you! But let’s put your past successes in context. You were still fresh out of the barracks, riding that motivational high, madly fighting your way through the slog of first-time craving combat with whatever you had at your disposal (toothpicks, straws, and support meetings), improvising your way through this early-abstinence obstacle course, fleeing any temptation you could, and making very heavy use of your willpower. So, if you’ve tried quitting before, you know that the first couple of weeks weren’t terribly awful, particularly if you were on some kind of nicotine-replacement product. That’s one of the reasons smoking-cessation success rates tend to hold for a short while. The real struggle begins when you go off the patch or the gum or the pill, when your motivation to stay abstinent fades to the background as routine takes over. And that’s exactly when the impromptu craving-control combat begins to fail. That’s when the relapse rates skyrocket. It’s like a flank attack. You rammed right through the thick of the enemy troops, but bam!—all of a sudden, there are more of them (cravings) coming at you from behind every corner. This, of course, catches you with your pants down. By this time your support people have already assumed that you have won that battle, and suddenly you find yourself alone, one on one with a series of gnawing, recurrent, often insidiously out-of-the-blue cravings. And then it dawns on you: the battle for abstinence has just begun. That’s when, more than ever, you will need to call in some craving-control air support. With this in mind, your overall training goal is to make craving control your first order of smoking business so that in the weeks to come, whenever you have a craving, the first thought that should pop into your mind is I need to defuse this craving, rather than I need to go smoke. Okay, enough said. It’s time to learn how to smoke air.
